A QUICK GUIDE TO MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENT

Material handling equipment
Material handling equipment incorporates a diverse range of tools, vehicles, storage units, appliances and accessories used to transport, store, control, count, and protect products or materials during manufacturing, distribution, consumption or disposal. The four main categories or classifications of material handling equipment include; transport, engineered systems, bulk material handling, and storage.

Transport equipment – cranes, conveyors, industrial trucks such as pallet jacks or hand trucks
Material handling equipment that falls into the transport category is used to move material from one location to another (e.g. between workplaces, between a loading dock and a storage area, etc.) while positioning equipment is used to manipulate material at a single location. The major subcategories of transport equipment are conveyors, cranes, and industrial trucks. Materials can also be moved manually or powered lift and operation can be walk or ride, requiring a user to manually push them or to ride along on the truck.

Engineered systems – conveyor systems, robotic delivery systems, automatic guided vehicles
Material handling equipment that falls into the engineered systems category is used to handle material at a single location to enable storage or transport.  Systems are often automated and can be used by a worker or can perform fully automated functions.

Bulk material handling – conveyor belts, stackers, reclaimers, bucket elevators, grain elevators, hoppers, silos
Material handling equipment that falls into the bulk material handling category is used to control loose materials in bulk forms such as food or liquid. Equipment such as conveyor belts or elevators that are designed to move large quantities of material in loose form, or in packaged form, through the use of drums and hoppers.

Storage equipment – racks, pallets, shelving, storage drawers, mezzanines, stacking frames
Most commonly non-automated equipment used for holding or buffering materials while not in use or in transport. The main function of storage equipment is to minimize handling costs by making the material easily accessible and gaining the maximum use of space.
