USAGE OF SNATCH STRAPS

Snatch Straps are a must-have accessory if you own a 4WD and enjoy “going bush” or perhaps 4WDing on the beach. If you get stuck, there really are limited ways to recover your vehicle and this is where the Snatch Strap is one of the most cost-effective, easiest options to use; as long as there is one other vehicle to assist.

A Snatch Strap is a length of elasticated nylon webbing bound together to form a rope, which when used properly in a vehicle recovery, is attached to rated recovery points via rated bow shackles on a rescue vehicle and a stricken vehicle. When the rescue vehicle pulls away, the strap stretches tight, absorbs the kinetic energy involved, and uses that energy to ‘snatch’ the stuck vehicle out of strife.

WHAT TO DO IF I GET BOGGED?

If it happens that you get stuck, you should first assess how badly is the vehicle bogged? Are all four wheels spinning freely? Is the underbody snagged on a half-buried tree stump, branch, or rock?

You should also remove any obstructions from under and around the car ensuring that it has a clear path to pull the vehicle out, either in a straight-line in the front or at the rear of the stuck vehicle, depending on which recovery route is the simplest and then you can formulate the best action plan.

Rather than depending on a tow ball, you need to make sure you install a recovery point on your car. The reason for this is that the tow ball may come off because of the intense working force which could then become a weapon and seriously injure someone. Make sure you don't use the car's shipping tie-down points as recovery points either, since they are meant to keep the vehicle in place on a truck or car carrier and aren't robust enough to withstand the rigours of a vehicle recovery. Using a rated recovery point on your vehicle is the best practice where you may utilise your tow-hitch receiver.
